Diaspora Technology Observatory

Africa's Free Technology Library

Verified patent intelligence for African manufacturers, investors, and institutions — showing which technologies are already legally free to use.

When a patent expires, the underlying manufacturing technology enters the public domain. Any company, anywhere, can then use it without permission or payment. Africa imported US$542.00 billion in manufactured goods in 2023 — a significant share of it using technology that is already free. DTO finds, verifies, and maps those technologies for you.

The Continent-Wide Opportunity

Africa Pays Billions For Technology That Is Already Free

The African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) has created a single market covering all 54 African Union member states with a combined population of approximately 1.40 billion people. When a patent reaches the end of its 20-year legal term, the technology enters the public domain — meaning any company, anywhere, can use it without paying the original inventor. Most African businesses are unaware of how many technologies this applies to.

The Process

From Patent Database to Your Factory Floor

We do the patent research so your team does not have to. Every entry in the DTO library has been verified against public patent databases before it is published.

01
We Find It
We search WIPO PATENTSCOPE, the USPTO (US Patent and Trademark Office), Espacenet (European Patent Office), and the Medicines Patent Pool for technologies in your sector whose patents have legally expired.
02
We Verify It
We confirm the expiry date against the original patent record. We also check whether alternative access routes exist — such as a free sublicence from the Medicines Patent Pool for certain medicines.
03
We Map It
We produce a consultation identifying which specific technologies apply to your sector and country, with the relevant regulatory body, implementation notes, and a direct link to the verified source.
04
You Decide
You review the verified information and decide whether to pursue the technology. You always confirm independently with your national regulatory authority before manufacturing begins.

Common Questions
What format are the reports and how do I receive them?
All reports are professionally formatted PDF documents. After payment you receive an immediate download link by email and can access your files at any time through your Lemon Squeezy order page.
Is the patent library really free, permanently?
Yes. The core library — browsing all patents, viewing details, and requesting a free consultation — will always be free. The paid sector reports add five additional layers on top of the library: key statistics analysis, regulatory pathways by country, financing tables, implementation roadmaps, and practical conditions tables. They are the full research product. The consultation is the conversation that helps you decide if a report is right for you.
Are the statistics and patent entries verified?
Yes. Every statistic in the reports is sourced to a primary reference — WIPO, USPTO, FAO, IRENA, USGS, WHO, ICCO, ICO, World Steel Association, and others. Every patent entry is verified against primary patent databases. Source links are provided for every entry.
Can African universities or government agencies get institutional access?
Yes — the Institutional tier at £500 per year is specifically designed for universities, ministry departments, development finance institutions, and innovation hubs. It includes unlimited report requests and direct researcher access. Contact hello@dtoportal.com to discuss your organisation's needs.
Is this legal? Can organisations actually use these patents?
Yes. Expired patents are in the public domain — any company anywhere in the world can use the technology without permission or payment. Patent Pool technologies require a free sublicence from the Medicines Patent Pool. We provide the regulatory guidance and implementation notes for each entry. Always consult your national regulatory authority before commencing manufacture.

The underlying technologies described in our reports — expired patents and public domain manufacturing processes — are not the intellectual property of DTO. Those technologies are, by definition, freely available to anyone. Our intellectual property is the research, compilation, analysis, and presentation of that information.

7. Disclaimer of Warranties

DTO reports are provided for informational and research purposes only. While every effort has been made to verify the accuracy of patent expiry dates, technology descriptions, regulatory pathways, and statistical data against primary sources — including WIPO PATENTSCOPE, the USPTO, Espacenet, the Medicines Patent Pool, FAO, IRENA, USGS, WHO, and other cited sources — we make no guarantee that the information is complete, current, or free from error.

In particular:

  • Patent law varies by jurisdiction. A patent that has expired in one country may still be active in another. You are responsible for verifying patent status in your specific country of manufacture.
  • Regulatory requirements for manufacturing and selling products vary by country. You must obtain all required approvals from your national regulatory authority before commencing manufacture or sale of any product.
  • Statistics cited in our reports are sourced from third-party primary sources as indicated. DTO does not guarantee the accuracy of those third-party sources.
  • Our reports do not constitute legal advice, regulatory advice, financial advice, or investment advice. You should seek independent professional advice before making manufacturing, investment, or business decisions.

8. Limitation of Liability

To the fullest extent permitted by law, the Diaspora Technology Observatory and Uzoma Charles Njoku shall not be liable for any direct, indirect, incidental, consequential, or special damages arising from your use of this website, your purchase of any product, or your reliance on any information contained in our reports or the free patent library.

Our total liability to you for any claim arising from a purchase shall not exceed the amount you paid for the relevant product.

9. Free Consultation Policy

One free written consultation is available per organisation. We reserve the right to determine what constitutes a single organisation for the purposes of this policy. Consultations are delivered by email within 48 hours on a best-efforts basis — response times may vary during high demand periods. A consultation does not constitute a contractual commitment to provide ongoing services.

10. Privacy and Data

When you submit a consultation request or join our waitlist, you provide us with your name, email address, and organisational details. This information is used solely to respond to your enquiry and to send relevant research updates if you have opted into our mailing list. We do not sell, rent, or share your personal data with third parties for marketing purposes.
